It was one of those nights at Dawson County Raceway when incidents were the norm in each of the four A Features in the night. There was not a full moon, although there will be next weekend when the United Rebel Sprint Series comes to town to join the other four classes on June 27, 6:30 p.m. start time. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Jim Buss of Blue Hill, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were the drivers that had the fewest dents on their cars en route to the A Feature wins.
“The Eddyville Flyer” Charles Stryker found a way from the second row to take the lead at the start of the IMCA Modified main event. He held the lead for a long time, mainly because it took four tries to complete lap five. After the third caution of the lap, heat winner David Murray went to the high side of Stryker to take the lead and never looked back. Stryker would fade, but Jay Steffens of North Platte would shine, as he and his car earned a second place finish. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg had quite a night. To go with his third place feature finish, Kennicutt also won the cash dash, and got to meet the winner of the fan of the week drawing, his daughter Natalie. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte finished in fourth place, ahead of Steve Aitken of Cozad, who came back from spinning on lap four while running in second place and going to the back of the field. Zach Schultz of North Platte won the other Modified heat race.
Seventeen IMCA Stock Cars hit the track for a twenty lap event, and when the race started, Cozad driver Ozzie Romero showed the way. There was good racing and hard racing throughout the field as almost all drivers were vying for position. At the front, Romero was worked on by Dan Walker of Eddyville. Heat winner Casey Werkmeister joined in on the fun at the front, and the three were followed closely by Colton Osborn and Harlan, Iowa driver Mike Nichols. Werkmeister found a way by Walker before the caution came out on lap twelve for a car stalled off of corner four. Two laps later, Romero made a mistake in corner three, allowing Werkmeister to make his move to the lead. Mike Nichols, the other heat winner, fell out of the battle on lap fourteen when he had troubles and drove off of corner two. He would return to the race at the back and garner a fourth place finish. Osborn would fall out of the running when the engine gave up the ghost with three laps to go. Romero dropped out with a lap to go. Werkmeister kept working it up front despite the other’s issues, taking the win. Brandon Clough of Wallace started in row six, but got by Walker with a lap to go to improve to second place at the finish. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood joined his brother in the final standing’s top five.
The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had two quick cautions at the beginning of the race, then clicked off the final fourteen laps without a stop. David Easterday of Kearney started on the front row and moved out to a fair lead while the other drivers jockeyed for second place. After heat race winner Jim Buss won the race for second place, he tracked down Easterday and worked for three laps to get by and take the lead. Buss distanced himself from the other drivers to earn the win, surprisingly his first feature win of the year at any track. Easterday had to hold off Dillon Thompson of Campbell and Frank Mladek of Cozad to gain his best ever second place finish. Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island, a heat race winner, spun on the opening lap, but salvaged the night with a fifth place finish.
Eric Steinmark of Kearney had not yet finished an IMCA SportMod A Feature, and it seemed like he would continue that streak after dropping out of his heat race when he felt a vibration. It was the result of mud in the tire, not as a result of changing a drive shaft, which the crew had to do between hot laps and heat races. However, Steinmark had the lead from the start and had a big lead when a lapped car spun in front of third place Shane Stout of North Platte as the cars came to take the white flag. It resulted in a green-white-checkered finish. Steinmark was cautious on the restart which resulted in not enough foot in the throttle, and the car pushed up the track in corner three. That opened the door for Colton Osborn, who made the pass and took his third SportMod victory at Dawson County Raceway. Shane Stout, Robby Leonard of Gibbon, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis also got by Steinmark for second, third, and fourth places, but Steinmark did finally complete a feature and was satisfied with a fifth place finish. The SportMod heat races were won by Stout and Lexington driver Vince Leibert.
