(Lexington, Nebr.--June 6) The races at Dawson County Raceway went well on Sunday night, as the fifty-seven cars in four divisions completed the night’s events in just a tick over two-and-a-half hours. That does not mean there wasn’t tight racing and torn up race cars, although most drivers were able to drive their cars onto their trailers. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Anthony Martin of Wilcox, and Vince Leibert of Lexington had cars that worked well and earned them A Feature victories.
Jeremy Herbst of North Platte showed he was the man to beat in the IMCA Modified A Feature, taking the lead on lap two despite starting back in the fourth row. As he raced in clean air, heat winner David Murray was working his way through the field from row five, and not making it into the top two until much later. Herbst had a one second lead on Murray when the caution came out with six laps to go. On the restart, Murray snuck underneath Herbst for the lead, but another caution realigned Herbst at the head of the field. Herbst restarted better, but Murray was still able to sneak underneath in corner two with three laps to go and take the win. Jay Steffens of North Platte, also a heat winner, spent much of the race up high, and used it to get by Josh Sabin of North Platte for third place. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, finished in fifth place.
Dawson County Raceway may have to change it’s “The Best Race Three Abreast” logo after the IMCA Stock Cars went four wide into corner three on the opening lap, and made it work. That battle was behind heat race winner Kerry Jones of North Platte. When they sorted out behind him, Colton Osborn of Cozad came to the front, using the low line to obtain the lead on lap three. Mike Nichols ran up top and two put on a show. Nichols was able to slowly reel in the leader, then drive away for the win. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, also a heat race winner, was able to get back by Osborn on a late restart for second place. Jim Hagan of Lexington used the high line to get into the top six, then dropped down low to get by Cale Osborn of Cozad and Kerry Jones for fourth place.
The IMCA Hobby Stocks previewed what was to come in the A Feature in the wild and wooly cash dash, which was won by Dillon Thompson of Campbell. Three cautions during the first two laps slowed the pace of the race and found several drivers making pit stops during the slow times. Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kansas was out in front in the clean out, ahead of the chaos. Anthony Martin also avoided the chaos and benefited from some of it, as he had to start the race in row six. On lap six, he found a way by Wagner. The two of them were joined by Jim Buss of Blue Hill, and the three remained fairly close. Martin had some breathing room when he crossed the finish line first, he first ever feature win at Dawson County Raceway. Wagner won the battle of the #29 cars, as his #29 beat Buss’s #29E to the finish line. Frank Mladek of Cozad and Ben Hobbs of Red Cloud made early pit stops to repair damaged cars and remove loose sheet metal and were able to come back for fourth and fifth places, respectively. Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell where the Hobby Stock heat winners.
The IMCA SportMod of Vince Leibert was too tight two weeks ago, so the crew decided to loosen the car up until it spun out. Last week, they got the car to that spot, and went from there. On Sunday night, Leibert took the lead from Eric Steinmark of Kearney on lap three and appeared to be have of the best handling cars of the night. Leibert was unchallenged on the last twelve laps of the A Feature on the way to his first of the year, and his first SportMod feature win. Colton Osborn finished in second place, ahead of Shane Stout of North Platte, Robby Leonard of Gibbon, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis, who had spun on the second lap of the race and had to drive without an aid of another caution to earn the spot. Leibert and Stout where the heat winners in the SportMods.
After taking a week off, Dawson County Raceway will be back in action on Sunday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. That night will also be a Burger King Nine for Nine night for the Modifieds.
