(Lexington, Nebr.--May 30) When everyone came to Dawson County Raceway Sunday night, they knew they were in for a lot of racing. Three A Features had to be made up from the previous week before the night’s program could even begin. By the end of the night, seven different drivers earned A Feature wins, they being David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Steve Aitken and Colton Osborn of Cozad, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island, and Kyle Prauner of Norfolk.
The first IMCA Modified A Feature had Jamey Kennicutt with a huge lead on the field, and the last thing he wanted to see was a caution period. On lap eleven, he got a caution period, and the field was aligned to his rear. Steve Aitken was one of the drivers on his tail. On the restart, Aitkin had a great start and an opening to get by Kennicutt for the lead. David Murray, Jr. fell off the track on the opening lap, and a caution after lap one had him in twelfth place. The second caution aided him, but he was still hammering the accelerator hard to try to get to the front. With one lap to go, he flew by Kennicutt and was closing in on Aitken, but ran out of time to deny Aitken his first win of the year. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado finished in fourth place, with Eddyville’s Charles Stryker coming home in fifth place.
Murray wasted no time in the second A Feature in getting to the front. It took the heat race winner three laps to get from the tenth starting spot to the lead, and with the last nineteen laps going caution-free, he was well ahead of the battle for second place. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte was able to hold Steve Aitken at bay for second place. Jeremy Frenier, the other IMCA Modified heat race winner of the night, finished in fourth place. Rookie Zach Schultz of North Platte brought his car across the finish line after him.
Casey Werkmeister of Maywood had a situation similar to Kennicutt’s in the opening IMCA Stock Car A Feature. He had a big lead and did not want to see a caution. On lap ten, the caution fell. To add insult to injury, it was his brother Kyle’s car that brought it out. The pressure was on at the restart from Colton Osborn, Mike Nichols, and Cale Osborn of Cozad. Colton found a way by Casey on lap fourteen. On the backstretch, the four tried to go into corner three four wide, and that sent Cale Osborn for a spin. The caution was called on him, and he went to the rear of the field. Colton was able to handle the pressure of Nichols late to take the victory. Werkmeister finished in third place. Cale Osborn moved back into fourth place in the last six laps. Jason Smidt of Minden finished in fifth place.
After an opening lap pileup in the second Stock Car Feature, Mike Nichols ate up the lead of Jason Smidt like a cupcake and took command of the race on lap three. The race was slowed by two cautions on lap seven, but once they got it completed, the next thirteen laps went caution-free. Nichols drove away from the field for a big win. Smidt was left to defend second place from Ogallala’s Casey Woken, which he was able to do. Cole Osborn finished in fourth place. After Brandon Clough of Wallace drove off the track with a lap to go, brother Kyle inherited and finished in fifth place. Colton Osborn and Jason Smidt were the winners of the IMCA Stock Car heat races.
The first IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature win went down to the wire. Anthony Martin of Wilcox jumped to the lead at the start of the event. He was eventually joined at the front by Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island Frank Mladek of Cozad, and Corey Cruzan. Martin was holding them off until his car broke down, forcing the caution and handing the lead to Andreasen. Cruzan finally made his way to second place and had one more move to try on the last lap. As he drove low in corner four to attempt a pass, Andreasen’s car shot up the track, opening the door wide open for the Maxwell driver to make the move and steal the win. Andreasen had to settle for second place. Mladek finished in third place. Kevin Hagan of Eddyville started in the back of the field and drove a car new to him into fourth place. Ben Hobbs of Red Cloud rounded out the top five.
The later Hobby Stock feature went fifteen laps without a caution. After troubles in the earlier race, Lonnie Greuter decided to waste no time, moving to the lead from row three on the opening lap, and never looked back. Anthony Martin made repairs to his car, and it held together all fifteen laps for second place. Heat race winner Ben Hobbs finished in third place. Frank Mladek earned his second top five finish with a fourth, right ahead of heat winner Dillon Thompson of Campbell.
The IMCA SportMods were the only division that did not have to make up a race. Kyle Prauner started in the front row, inside of heat race winner Eric Steinmark of Kearney. Prauner took the lead at the start, and held it during the first four laps, which were slowed by four cautions. During the next eleven caution-free laps, Prauner found his rhythm, obtaining a lead that Colton Osborn could not erase by the time the checkered flag waved. Bryan Herrick of Curtis was able to fend off Robbie Leonard of Gibbon for third place. Vince Leibert of Lexington changed a tire during a caution and drove his way up to fifth place at the finish.
Dawson County Raceway will be back in action on Sunday night, June 6. The gates will open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 6:30 p.m.
