The action at the Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday evening was jam-packed with great battles for the checkered flags in the URSS 305 Sprint Car series as well as the IMCA divisions that compete at the tacky 3/8th mile oval on the Dawson County Fairgrounds.
Notching Feature victories was the United Rebel Sprint Car Series (URSS) hotfoot Brian Herbert and IMCA elite performers David Murray Jr., Mike Nichols, Jesse Sobbing and Anthony Martin.
No stranger to victory lane during the visits to Dawson County Raceway during his career in the URSS is Dodge City, Kansas driver Brian Herbert. Herbert was able to gain the lead in the Feature race on a restart on lap 16 and he never looked back in pulling away for the victory, the second at DCR of his career. In a neck and neck battle for second through lap traffic was Luke Cranston of Plains, Kansas; on his tail tank and finishing third overall was heat race winner Jeff Radcliffe of Hill City, Kansas. Radcliffe was knotted for the URSS season points lead, entering the night of action on the DCR oval. Heavy on the loud pedal, Sublette Kansas’ Lance Davis was fourth across the line in the feature event, pulling a stellar performance in the final laps to overcome the early leader of the Feature John Blurton, who rounded out the top five in the URSS Feature. Along with Radcliffe, North Platte’s John Webster won a heat race on the night.
Picking up his second straight Feature win at Dawson County Raceway to raise his career IMCA A Feature total to 497, was Oberlin, Kansas’ David Murray Jr., as he overcame a caused caution that sent the legend to the tail of the field during a thrown yellow flag during the third circuit. Working the high groove on the cushion and sliding to the bottom and finding moisture, Murray was able to snare the win on the third green-white-checkered flag restart to earn the sweep, in winning his heat race as well as the Feature event. Leading the way from the onslaught in the Feature event was Osceola, Nebraska’s Dylan Smith. Smith finished in the runner-up position after being edged during the final laps on the third restart by Murray. Bringing home the show position honors was the reigning IMCA Modified track champion Jay Steffens of North Platte, Nebraska. Rounding out the top five in the IMCA Modified division was Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, Nebraska and Cozad, Nebraska’s Cale Osborn in fourth and fifth place, respectively in the Feature. Taking the checkered flag in the heat races with David Murray Jr., was Ogallala, Nebraska’s Cole Hodges.
Taking the lead just after the halfway point, Harlan, Iowa wheelman Mike Nichols powered to the checkered flag in the IMCA Stock Cars division at DCR on Sunday night. Nichols started in the fifth row of the feature and worked his magic to get within the top five at the conclusion of the first five laps of the event. Holding onto the lead prior to Nichols sliding past him for the lead, was Gothenburg, Nebraska’s Jeff Whiting who finished third overall. Earlier in Sunday’s racing action, Whiting won the opening heat race of the night. Putting the pressure on Nichols in the waning laps of the Feature was Ogallala’s Casey Woken, the runner-up finisher in the Stock Car feature. Battling it out on the loud pedal around the Lexington oval was Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Nebraska and Kyle Clough of Wallace, Nebraska. Wermeister and Clough took home fourth and fifth place accolades. Winning the second heat race of the night was Dan Walker of Eddyville.
Winning his second straight Feature in the Northern Sport Modified divison at Lexington was Glenwood, Iowa’s Jesse Sobbing. Finding the low groove to his advantage, Sobbing cruised to the win in stellar fashion. Heat race winner Colton Osborn, of Cozad, Nebraska finished in second place and was applying pressure to the leader. In the mix for top honors in the Northern Sport Modified events are Bryan Herrick of Curtis and Lexington, Nebraska’s Vince Leibert. , as they were followed by Dillon Schultz. Making his way through lap traffic with no signs of slowing down, Wilcox, Nebraska’s Anthony Martin won his second consecutive Feature event in the Hobby Stock division at DCR on Sunday. Pacing the field past the halfway point was Norfolk, Nebraska’s Tiffany Bittner. Bittner would try her best to work past Martin, but it wasn’t enough and the 95b had to settle for runner-up honors when the checked flags flew. In the mix at the front of the field throughout the 20-lap feature was Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island and Dillon Thompson of Campbell. Andreasen crossed the finish line in front of Thompson to win third place, while Thompson had to settle for fourth place overall. Rounding out the top five in the Hobby Stock Feature race was Fullerton, Nebraska’s Jim Buss. Thompson, Andreasen and Buss were the heat race winners on Sunday, to go along with their stellar finishes in the Feature.
