Dawson County Raceway was back in action after a one week layoff, and four good fields of cars came to run on Fan Appreciation and Jeremy Trompke Memorial Night. Bad weather nearby forced intermission to be shortened, but it stayed away from the track, and actually helped getting the show run in three hours. Kyle Bond of Gibbon, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, and Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas appreciated the fast track and took the four beautiful trophies supplied by the Trompke family.
Jeremy Trompke was a good friend of IMCA Hobby Stock driver Kyle Bond and worked with him and many other drivers from Buffalo County before his passing last year. Bond is normally a technical official on Sunday nights, but took the night off to run his #36 car, numbered in honor of his friend. Bond ended up in the middle of what was at least a ten car pileup in corner four of the first lap. All four corners were dented from the wreck, but nothing was rubbing on the tires, so he realigned on the restart a little better than his original row six start. By lap four, he passed Larry Refior of Lexington for the lead and pulled away with the win, which was also his second in two nights, the previous night at Doniphan, on what would have been Jeremy’s 38th birthday. Refior earned his second consecutive second place finish in a row in Lexington. Anthony Martin of Wilcox, David Easterday of Riverdale, and Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island rounded out the top five. Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island, Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk, and Anthony Martin won the heat races for the Hobbies.
Ethan Johnson of Broken Bow jumped to the lead at the start of the IMCA Modified A Feature in search for his first Modified A Feature win. He would soon be joined by David Murray, who has over 450 IMCA Modified wins under his belt. After a lap seven caution, Murray was able to keep digging low until he finally passed Johnson on lap nine. The track was taking rubber, which meant there was bite on the track when you looked for it, and Murray used it to drive away for the win. Johnson still had a respectable second place. Jim Mlady of North Platte used the lap eight restart to pass a bunch of cars and earn a third place finish. Jay Steffens of North Platte was fourth, and Josh Sabin was able to make it three North Platte drivers in the row when he barely got by Scott Smith of Davenport for fifth place. Murray and Cole Hodges won the IMCA Modified heat races.
Sara Powers of North Platte showed some power at the beginning of the IMCA Stock Car Feature. The pink streaks in her hair (in honor of Relay for Life), must have been the thing to keep her in the lead for the first three laps. Mike Nichols was able to cleanly get by her on lap four, but the two had a big lead on the rest of the field before a lap ten caution bunched everyone back up. On the restart, Powers took a shot in the rear of the car by another driver which got her car loose and out of contention. Kyle Clough of Wallace had already moved into second by then, but he was not able to slow down the Iowa driver from winning his third Dawson County A Feature in the past four tries. Casey Woken of Ogallala started back in row seven, yet was able to get by Casey Werkmeister of Maywood for third place. Brendan Eilts of Grand Island was fith. Cozad brothers Colton and Cale Osborn were the two heat race winners for the division.
The IMCA Northern SportMod division had a slow start for their feature, with three cautions in the first four laps. Ben Hobbs of Red Cloud started out front and the trouble happen behind him. On lap three, heat winner Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and Bryan Herrick of Curtis were racing for third when they tangled in corner three, which sent the cars behind them everywhere. When things settled down, national points contenders Tyler Frye and Wichita, Kansas racer Bryan LaRiviere began to work their way forward. Frye caught up to Hobbs first and passed him on lap ten. LaRiviere would catch him a few laps later, but by then, Frye had check out. Hobbs still had a respectable third place finish, and Craig Howard of Lexington never let the big boys rattle his cage as he held onto fourth place. Herrick would finish in fifth place. Denny Egge of Kearney was the other heat race winner for the SportMods.
Racing returns to Dawson County Raceway next Sunday, August 14 at 6:30 p.m. The United Rebel Sprint Series returns to Lexington to bring some Sprint Car excitement. Grandstand admission will be $13 for adults, and $5 for children 6-12.
