There was no worry about rain at Dawson County Raceway on Sunday, as the heat baked any rain cloud of the sky. With as many races that had to be run, the fans knew they were in for a big night of racing. After seven A Features were run for the night, seven different drivers had A Feature victories. The winners were Darrick Klima and Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas, David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, and Tyler Andreasen and Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island.
David Murray started the IMCA Modified makeup A Feature back in thirteen position, but on lap seven, overtook Phillips driver Wade Cross for the lead. The twenty lap race actually went without a caution, and Murray paced the final thirteen laps unabated. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado finished in third place. Jay Steffens finished close to him in fourth, and Rick Schwab of Norton, Kansas rounded out the top five.
The second IMCA Modified A Feature finished wildly, but started out innocent enough with heat winner Darrick Klima at the top spot. Four cautions slowed the first seven laps, but on lap eight, Mr. Belleville Motor Sports picked up where he left off and pulled away from some good racing behind him. On the fourteenth lap, Klima drove his car off of corner three, allowing Jay Steffens and Jeremy Frenier to go by. Frenier closed in during the waning laps, and the two set out for battle. Finally, in corner three of the last lap, the two got into each other on the bottom of the track, while they tried to drive away, Klima drove by on the high line to return to the lead and crossed the finish line first. After a very lengthy discussion by officials, Steffens was credited with second place. Rich Schwab finished the feature in third, Jim Mlady of North Platte finished in fourth place, and Cole Hodges of Ogallala ran fifth.
Mike Nichols took the lead on the opening lap of the first IMCA Stock Car A Feature, which made up for the one rained out last week. Nichols was joined at the front for a time by Casey Woken of Ogallala, but Casey was not able to shake him from the lead. Casey Werkmeister finished ahead of Cale and Colton Osborn of Cozad in the third position.
A pileup on the opening lap of the second Stock Car Feature had the field realign, and after they did, the drivers went twenty laps without a yellow. Kyle Clough of Wallace gained the lead on the first lap, but did not stay high enough on the track to block the tandem of Casey Werkmeister and Mike Nichols. The two stayed nose-to-tail for most of the race, with Nichols trying different things now and then to take the lead from the Maywood driver. Casey held his line, and when the two caught up to slower cars on the last lap, zigged and zagged at the right times to hold Nichols at bay to get his feature win for the night. Clough maintained third spot, while Casey Woken finished fourth. Dan Walker of Eddyville improved four spots from his earlier race to fifth place in the second feature. The top two drivers also took the Stock Car heat wins for the night.
Dillon Thompson of Campbell jumped out to the early lead in the early Hobby Stock A Feature. On lap six, the caution came out after a radiator hose exploded on the car. Lonnie Greuter would take the lead on the seventh lap, but one lap later, lost a right rear wheel. That handed the top spot over to Tyler Andreasen, who spent much of the last seven laps holding his line as he was pressured by Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk. Tyler could not be shaken out of the top spot. Bittner had Jason Wilkinson of Neligh behind her at the finish. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon beat Larry Refior of Lexington for fourth place.
After learning four wheels work better than three, Greuter did his best to not drive the wheels off his car in the second IMCA Hobby Stock main event. He took the lead on lap one, and fifteen laps later, crossed the finish line in first place, four tires and all intact. Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kansas won the silver in his gold car, taking second. Thompson had his car fixed and kept it cool enough to finish in third. Wilkinson and Rayburn rounded out the top five. Anthony Martin of Wilcox and Lonnie Grueter were the heat race winners.
The IMCA Northern SportMod class only had one A Feature for the night, but what they lacked in number of features, they made up for with time. Eight caution periods turned the twenty lap dash into a marathon. On the third caution in the opening lap, points leader Tyler Frye was involved in a multi-car pileup, and he did not initially drive away from it. Some mistook it at him being out for the night, but once the car was started, he moved back to his original position. Denny Egge of Kearney passed Craig Howard of Lexington for the lead and had plans of a Cruise night of his own, but two laps later, something in the rear end of the car broke, and Egge cruised off the track. By this time, Frye had snuck into the lead. Cautions behind him kept coming, and eventually Shane Stout of North Platte, who himself hit the front wall at the start of the race, came up to challenge as well. It made things interesting, yet Frye stayed at the front and wound up sweeping the A Features for the three nights he raced this weekend. Howard had a satisfying third place finish. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg spun twice off of the track, was nearly lapped once, and yet earned the fourth place check. Bryan Herrick of Curtis was fifth. The heat race winners for the SportMods were
Frye and Kennicutt.
After resting up during the week, drivers, officials, and fans will come back to Dawson County Raceway for the races on Sunday, July 24. The carnival is expected to be torn down, and it is hoped the cars will pit in the normal pit area and fans will be able to park behind the stands again. Joining the regular four classes will be the four-cylinder Hornet class. The races will start at 6:30 p.m.
