(North Platte, Nebraska--July 16) The second night of the Sandhills Shootout for the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars was held on Saturday night, June 16. All but two of the cars from the night before came back to run for bigger money on the second night. When the races were over, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood were holding the big trophies.
Much like the night before, the IMCA Stock Car A Feature had minimal yellow periods, three quick cautions to be exact. Pole Dash winner Perry Meisner of Garden City, Kansas started on the front row inside of the twenty-five lap event, but it was heat winner Casey Werkmeister who was able to take over and lead the first lap. The first caution did not wave until ten laps were completed when Kyle Clough of Wallace cut a tire. The heat winner could not make it back to the pits. After the restart, Meisner battled with the other heat race victor, Charley Brown of Maxwell, and the two put on a good show for the spot until Brown was able to get by on the sixteenth lap. In spite of two other cautions that helped Brown restart a close second, they were about all that slowed Werkmeister down on his way to earning the $1,000.00 winner’s check. Brown and Meisner remained in second and third spots. The previous night’s A Feature winner, Ronnie Wallace of McCook, found the high groove late in the race to be agreeable, and drove to a fourth place finish. Casey Woken of Ogallala finished in fifth. The IMCA Stock Cars also had a cash dash, and it was won by Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood, the winner’s brother.
The IMCA Modifieds had yellow flag fever for the second straight night, with eight caution periods during their twenty-five lap race. Jim Mlady of North Platte won his heat race, the pole dash, and had hopes of sweeping his three events of the night. Mlady held the lead on the opening lap, but lost it as the field was coming to complete lap three after his car took a major push up into corner four. David Murray and others drove by, dropping Jim to at least seventh place. Murray was hounded for a bit by Cole Hodges of Ogallala, but then pulled away as the heat winner and Fort Morgan, Colorado driver Jeremy Frenier battled for second. Frenier made the pass, then was unable to pull away. With around five laps to go, Hodges got back by. Two cautions in the final five laps gave him two shots at the lead. Neither one were fruitful for him, and Murray, despite the delays, earned yet another Sandhills Shootout trophy and a check for $2,000. Hodges and Frenier were followed by young driver Joel Bushore of Boone, Iowa in fourth place. Jim Mlady moved back up into fifth place at the finish. The other IMCA Modifed heat race was won by North Platte driver Josh Sabin.
The next regular race at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, July 30. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m.
