Dan ďThe ManĒ In The Modifieds, Ronnie Rocks The Stocks

"Seems Like Old Times"--In this picture are the two A Features of the night. On the left is Ronnie Wallace of McCook, who captured the IMCA Stock Car win in Brent Gibson's Stock Car. On the right is Dan Carl of North Platte, who took the IMCA Modified win with his car (in the picture). Both have won many A Features in their many years of driving at Lincoln County Raceway, but it is each their first win during the Sandhills Shootout.--Photo courtesy of Tamie Thurn

(North Platte, Nebraska--July 15) Opening night of the Sandhills Shootout at Lincoln County Raceway seemed a little strange, and it very well could have been the effect of the full moon. And, while the Shootout Features are often won by out-of-towners, regulars Dan Carl of North Platte and Ronnie Wallace, now of McCook, found their way to an old familiar place, victory.

The IMCA Modified A Feature was paced in the early stages by pole dash winner Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado. He was followed by heat winner Cole Hodges of Ogallala. At about lap six, the race began to become plagued by caution flags, the third one sending heat winner Ronnie Wallace to the back after a spin with a tractor tire. Brent Bohmont of McCook and David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas were having a good duel for third position for awhile until Bohmontís car shot off the track on lap thirteen, bringing out caution number four. Murray inherited third place, but went to the pits on the next caution after he and Hodges made contact. After another yellow on lap fourteen, Frenier again jumped out into the lead, but by corner three had made the decision to pull into the pits with mechanical issues, handing the reigns to Cole. Hodges led to the final yellow on lap nineteen, but he, too, pulled into the pits during the caution. He was able to get back out and finish the race. Dan Carl, who started back in eleventh position passed cars and bided his time until inheriting the lead on that final yellow, but wasted no time wrapping up the race with his first IMCA Modified win in three years. Ronnie Wallace found his way up to second place by the end of the crazy twenty-five lap event. Dominic Ursetta of Arvada, Colorado was the highest finishing visitor car, coming in third. Jay Steffens of North Platte and Charley Brown of Maxwell rounded out the top five. Josh Sabin of North Platte won the cash dash held earlier in the night.

Ronnie Wallace also drove Brent Gibsonís IMCA Stock Car for the evening, and started the evening first with a win the heat race, and then the pole dash win. Charley Brown, another driver doing double duty, started along side Wallace at the drop of the green. Only two caution periods occurred during this twenty-five lap main event, and they happened before the first seven laps. Early in the race, Wallace was shadowed by Cale Osborn of Cozad, another heat winner, who was shadowed by his brother Colton. Despite racing 75 laps during the night, 50 of those in the A Features, Wallace kept sharp and left the second place shadow behind to gain the win over that field. While Cale Osborn quietly finished in second, Colton Osborn became embroiled in a battle with Charley Brown for third. The two Dirt Boss drivers made contact in corner two, sending Osborn into the track infield and Brown around the track with a disheveled nose piece. Charley didnít need it to finish in third place over Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. Brandon Clough of Wallace kept his brother Kyle behind him for fifth place. The other heat win went to Garden City, Kansas driver Perry Meisner.

The second night of the Sandhills Shootout will be held Saturday night, July 16. The IMCA Stock Car A Feature winner will receive $1000 dollars, and the IMCA Modified winner will receive $2000. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m.
