Lightning in the area, sprinkles, and storms in the vicinity forced the end of the Races at Dawson County Raceway prematurely. The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was halted after six laps. On July 10, the remaining fourteen laps will be run, followed by the IMCA Modified A Feature. Only cars that qualified for the A Feature on June 19 will be allowed to run the make up feature. Despite of the chaos created by the weather, two features were completed, and they were won by Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas and Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island.
Seventeen IMCA Northern SportMod drivers started the twenty lap A Feature. Heat winner Ben Hobbs of Red Cloud took the lead at the start, only to be passed by Tyler Frye two laps later. Frye had started on the fifth row and drove around the top of the track to make his way to the front. Colton Osborn of Cozad also started on the fifth row, and it took him a little while longer to get into the second spot. Cautions kept him close, but on the final six laps, Frye maintained a healthy lead en route to his fifth win. James Libra of Overton survived an early crash not of his own doing and a smoking engine to finish in third place. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and Cash Dash winner Shane Stout of North Platte rounded out the top five. Lexington’s Craig Howard won the other heat race in the SportMod class.
After a spin on the opening lap, the IMCA Hobby Stocks regrouped for their fifteen lap feature, and managed to go the distance with only one more caution. Lonnie Greuter passed Larry Refior of Lexington on lap two and tried to open up an insurmountable lead. Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk tried her best to surmount it, and had caught the Grand Island driver with five laps to go. The caution appeared to be a wakeup call for Greuter, and he drove harder after the restart, putting some distance between he and the current leader of IMCA Lady Eagle points for his first DCR A Feature win of the year. Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island took the third place finish. Kevin Hagan of Eddyville earned a trip to the claim and tech areas with a fourth place finish. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon was caught up in the first incident, went to the pits, restarted the race at the back, and turned things into a fifth place finish. Grand Island drivers Greuter and Andreasen won the Hobby Stock heat races.
Four cautions slowed the first six laps of the IMCA Stock Car Feature, two of the accidents requiring wreckers. Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado had an engine grenade while he was running in the top four, with several cars right behind him that piled up into each other among the chaos. Four laps later, Dan Walker of Eddyville lost a front wheel after coming out of the pit area a few laps down. While they were putting him on the hook, the lightning was getting fierce and closer, and it began to sprinkle. That was when the decision was made to call the races. Mike Nichols of Harlan Iowa was the leader at the time of the end. Nichols and Cale Osborn of Cozad were the heat race winners for the division.
Thirteen IMCA Modifieds qualified for the A Feature via the heat races. Travis Mack of Alda attacked the track and held back an attacking Jay Steffens of North Platte to win his heat race. Charles Styker of Eddyville stayed ahead of Brent Bohmont of McCook and the rest of the field to win heat two.
The July 10 show already promised to be big, and the addition of the unfinished race and the make up feature from June 19 will make it bigger. Besides these two races and the regular show for the usual four classes, the SLMR Late Model Series, headquartered in Eastern Nebraska, will be on hand to put on a show as well. The races will start at 6:30 p.m. Grandstand admission will be $18 for adults and $8 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under will be admitted for free. Pit passes will be $25.
