Despite the warm temperatures, the racing was good in Lexington, and was completed in three hours. That was even including the Outlaw Vintage Lite Racing Series, a fifth class added to the program. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas, Jason Wilkinson of Neligh, and Brad Bayne of Greeley, Colorado were the drivers speeding to A Feature wins on Sunday night.
Martell native Brent Bohmont, now of McCook, started on the front row of the IMCA Modified A Feature and took off with the lead. As the crowd saw a few weeks ago, while many cars were running the low line, Jeremy Frenier ran the high line and took command on lap six. The race was stopped two laps later after Ethan Johnson of Broken Bow spun, Cole Hodges of Ogallala spun and ran into him, and Brooke Eilts of Grand Island ran into Hodges in a bang-bang moment. All three were done for the night, but the drivers either walked or drove away from the wreck. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas made his first appearance to Dawson County Raceway of the year and worked into second place. After some time trying to get lap eleven complete, Murray had a good restart and got by Frenier to take the lead on lap twelve. Frenier was not phased, regained the lead on lap thirteen, and kept Murray in his rear window on the way to his second win of the year at the track. Jay Steffens of North Platte had a rough first half of the race, but finally got the car to work to move into third place by the end of the race. Charles Stryker of Eddyville finally finished a race, and did so in fourth, ahead of Charley Brown of Maxwell. Wade Cross of Phillips won the other Modified heat race.
Mike Nichols has had an up and down season at Dawson County Raceway, and this was his weekend to be up. After winning his heat race, he started on the second row of the main event and took the lead on the opening lap. He would open up a big lead when the caution came out on lap thirteen for a car stopped on the track. After a restart one lap later, Nichols had a sluggish start, and was hounded by Cale Osborn of Cozad and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. After a few laps, Nichols finally pulled out far enough to have a comfortable lead at the finish line. Osborne beat Werkmeister back to the finish line for second place. Brandon Clough of Wallace finished in fourth place on bald tires. Robby Roselli of Minot, North Dakota, who had the choice of filling sandbags in flooding Minot or coming to Nebraska for racing, opted to come racing and took a fifth place finish for his efforts. Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado was the winner of heat two in the Stock Car division.
The IMCA Northern SportMods had limited cautions during their twenty lap event, both on lap thirteen. Vince Leibert of Lexington was fast as he is most night, pacing the first seven laps of the A Feature, then fell back after the engine overheated, as it has for him the past few race nights. Colton Osborn of Cozad took over on lap eight. Tyler Frye, who’s car looked a little odd after replacing sheet metal with spare parts after a rough night Saturday night, didn’t let the appearance of his car slow him down. He was able to catch his fellow heat race winner and get by him for his third win in Lexington this year. Bryan Herrick, the winner the night before in North Platte, finished in a distance third. James Libra of Overton, who went to the pits to cool his car during one of the lap thirteen cautions, came from the back to take fourth place, with the cooled off Leibert taking fifth place.
IMCA Hobby Stock drivers might be collecting money to purchase a boat anchor to slow down Jason Wilkinson. Wilkinson picked up his third win in four nights Sunday night, passing Tyler Easterday of Lexington on lap three and staying in front of the hard-charging Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island. Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk, who picked up a Hobby Stock feature win in Albion on Friday, finished in third place, ahead of Grand Island’s Tyler Andreasen and Wilcox’s Anthony Martin. Andreasen and Wilkinson were also heat race winners.
The Outlaw Vintage Lites put on a good, clean, caution-free event for the fans. Brad Bayne jumped out to an early lead, only to be passed by fellow heat winner Brandon Spanjer of Crete. Bayne would take the lead back on lap seven, and Spanjer stayed right with him. The two had such a big lead on the rest of the field, who were putting on a good battle of their own, that when Spanjer spun on the last lap trying to make one more unsuccessful pass on Bayne, he was able to get the car started back up and still cross the finish line in second place. Warren Harkness of Scott City, Kansas was the driver that almost got Spanjer for the position. Mark Bruder of Crete finished in fourth place, and Kris Bayne of Greeley, Colorado, who rolled his car the night before in North Platte, kept the car on all four wheels in Lexington and took fifth place.
Racing resumes next Sunday night, June 12, at Dawson County Raceway, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
