Dawson County Raceway had a visit from the United Rebel Sprint Series Sunday Night. Between the added class, and the extra cars in all four classes, primarily aided by rainouts of other Nebraska tracks during the weekend, the pits were swollen with 85 racecars. By the end of the night, C. J. Johnson of Quinter, Kansas, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Dillon Thompson of Campbell, and Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas visited victory lane.
Sixteen year-old Zach Blurton of Jetmore, Kansas jumped out to the lead at the start of the twenty-five lap URSS Sprint Car A Feature. Blurton paced the race for the most part of a long green flag period. Despite lapping several cars, Brian Herbert of Dodge City, Kansas and C. J. Johnson were slowly reeling him in. On the fifteenth lap, Herbert was able to make the pass. On the next lap, Blurton’s car had come to a halt on the front stretch with mechanical problems, ending his strong run. After a lap eighteen caution when Chad Salem of Oberlin, Kansas and John Webster of North Platte did some unsynchronized spinning in front of the crowd, Herbert hunkered in to defend his lead from Johnson. The two were running nearly even speeds, with Herbert running the low line, and Johnson up top. With less than two laps to go, Johnson thought he might have a shot at getting by when the Dodge City driver came up on a slower car. Herbert timed it right and held onto the lead. However, in corner four of the last lap, Herbert came up on another slower car, slowing him just enough for Johnson to pass him 100 feet from the finish line. Third place finisher Mike Woodruff of Satanta, Kansas made a comeback after driving off corner three in the first third of the race. Kaden Taylor of Forgan, Oklahoma stayed in the top four all race and finished there as well. Jordan Randels of Sublette, Kansas took fifth place. Woodruff and Johnson were also the heat winners.
While leader Wade Cross of Phillips and second place Dylan Smith of Osceola were running the low line after lap five of the IMCA Modified A Feature, Jeremy Frenier had his car on the high line, and on lap nine, blew by for the lead. Frenier opened up a huge lead by the time the checkered flag waved on lap twenty. Smith held onto second place, and Albion’s Tyler Iverson finished in third. Fourth and fifth were filled out by heat race winners Cross and North Platte racer Zach Schultz.
Mike Nichols started outside row one of the IMCA Stock Car main event and had almost a half lap lead on Cozad’s Colton Osborn when the caution waved with four laps to go after Sal Hernandez of Columbus lost a wheel on his car. Osborn threatened Nichols’s lead on the restart, but one Mike found his line again, he distanced himself for a safe win. Brothers Kyle and Brandon Clough of Wallace finished in third and fourth places. Cale Osborn of Cozad finished in fifth place. Colton and Kyle were also the winners of the heat races.
When 20 IMCA Hobby Stocks hit the track at once, fans know a lot can happen, and usually does. However, the drivers kept things clean (for the most part), and the cautions were minimal. Heat winner Dillon Thompson was able to take the lead from Terry Greuter of Grand Island on lap two and set the pace of the race. Jason Wilkinson of Oakdale started back in row five and made his way through the field quickly. Thompson, although younger, used his experience advantage over Wilkinson at Dawson County Raceway to his advantage and kept him running in his tire tracks. Jim Buss of Fullerton started in row six, but moved up to third place in the fifteen lap event. Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island and Anthony Martin of Wilcox finished in fourth and fifth. Martin, Thompson, and Jim Rayburn of Gibbon took the heat race wins.
Nineteen IMCA Northern SportMods took the track for their main event, but they had a rougher time, having seven caution periods and getting their race called after the last one, after the leader took the white flag. Vince Leibert of Lexington was a rocket at the start of the race until his car started overheating. By the time he was slowing down, Tyler Frye was speeding up, and caught him on lap four. Colton Osborn had a bad start, but began to move forward and actually moved up to battle Denny Egge of Kearney for second place on lap seven. Osborn would get the spot and challenge Frye. Frye was able to hold Osborn at bay for his second win of the season. Leibert, who went in on lap seven to cool off the car, managed to work his way back into third place at the finish. Bryan Herrick of Curtis and Shane Stout of North Platte, who had his own drive from the back after a flat tire, finished in fifth. The three IMCA Northern SportMod heat races were won by Frye, Osborn, and Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg.
Racing returns to Dawson County Raceway next Sunday night, starting at 6:30 p.m.
